Around 11,000 hourly public workers set to strike in Cyprus on 17 September
The Finance Ministry urged unions to restore talks and maintain minimum emergency coverage in essential services.
What this report covers
The announced action concerns the Republic of Cyprus public and broader public sectors, not North Cyprus services.
Local context
The Finance Ministry said about 11,000 hourly workers are expected to join the 17 September strike: roughly 6,500 government hourly personnel and 5,500 workers at the State Health Services Organisation and School Boards outside the state payroll.
Who this matters to
The central dispute is a demand for a general 8% rise. The ministry estimates about €17 million a year from 2027 for the 6,500-person group and more than €300 million annually if extended across public-sector categories. It called for minimum staffing in hospitals, wildfire response, water supply, prisons and telecommunications.
