Cyprus advances new Central Prisons project at Agios Sozomenos
The government says the chosen state site could reduce infrastructure costs and shorten the project timetable.
What this report covers
The project is administered by the Republic of Cyprus; it is not a North Cyprus institution or planning decision.
Local context
Justice Ministry officials met on 15 September to review planning for the new Central Prisons, now being advanced for Agios Sozomenos. The government said site selection is proceeding alongside design, project preparation and financing work.
Who this matters to
Agios Sozomenos was preferred after technical and economic review because road, sewerage, water and electricity infrastructure is already available or nearby. The earlier Mathiatis option would have required substantial additional networks, adding cost and time. No final architectural design or completion date was announced.
